Renewed Hope

An OT classmate and friend of mine was recently featured in the Batesville Daily Guard, for the impact she has had on a patient during her clinicals there. I love to hear how everyone is doing as we all "fly the nest" to become "real OTs", but its usually shared on Facebook or in a text message...not on the front page of the newspaper! It's awesome for Jessica, and the profession of OT, to be recognized for great work that makes a difference.

To the certain delight of our faculty, she showed that true OT is not just armbikes and pegboards (the same thing for every client) but discovering what is truly valued by that individual and helping them do what it is they are passionate about. She took the time and thought to help this person do what she loves again...and no other OT she had worked with for the past 2 years had done that. The things we love to do are just as important as the things we have to do...It's what makes us who we are. Here's the feature article below. Awesome Jess!!

Occupational Therapy Gives Patients Renewed Hope
February 2008 is a month Samantha Bower can barely remember, but will never forget. While driving her son’s truck near her hometown of Newellton, Louisiana, she swerved to miss a car in her lane. The truck then jumped two culverts and slammed into a tree, propelling its loose speakers into Samantha, which caused significant damage to her face, head, neck, and back. When she woke up in the hospital weeks later, Samantha knew she was in bad shape. Worst of all—she could not feel her legs.

“Even though I don’t remember a lot about what happened, I’ll never forget the doctor coming in my room and telling me I would never be able to walk again,” she said. After spending months in the hospital, Samantha, a single mother of three, was finally released into her family’s care. They did the best they could to care for her, but it was very difficult, so she was taken to a nursing home.

“There I was, just in my 30’s, and I’m sitting helpless in a nursing home,” said Samantha. “I felt like a shell. I just sat there all day and cried.”

However, Samantha was far from helpless. Her physician recommended her for Occupational Therapy (OT) at White River Medical Center. Occupational Therapists (OTs) help patients develop the skills to carry out everyday tasks such as grooming, working, or playing. OTs work with patients who have an illness, injury, or disability that prevents them from doing day to day activities.

Now, there’s no limit to what Samantha can achieve. With the help of her OT Janet Wood, Samantha does many exercises that help her build upper body strength, improve stability, and perform activities of daily living. Samantha has learned to sit up on her own, bend over to put her shoes on, and do housework. She has also learned to dress herself.

“I’m proud of learning to get myself dressed,” said Samantha. “My daughter was dressing me before. She said she didn’t mind, but I could tell it was hard for her. I didn’t tell anyone that I was learning to dress myself. Then one night, I told her I was going to get ready for bed. She said, ‘Well, don’t you need my help?’ I said with a smile, ‘Nope, I can do it.’ And I did! It was a great moment.”
Samantha credits all her success to WRMC and WRMC PROS services.

The OT staff in Acute Inpatient Rehab at WRMC helped patient Linda Phares get back something that she thought that she had lost forever.

Landscape painting was an activity Linda Phares took great pleasure in.
“I have always enjoyed painting scenes,” she said with a faraway look in her eyes and a smile on her face. “One year, I won grand sweepstakes in the Imboden County fair. I was so proud of that.”

Linda had all intentions of entering another painting in the fair. Sadly, in 2008, Linda was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, a disease of the nerves that causes uncontrollable shaking. Linda’s hands were no longer steady enough to paint the beautiful scenes that she always enjoyed.

“Learning that I was never going to paint again was a hard pill to swallow,” she said, as her smile began to fade.

Although she worked with OT’s to learn how to function with Parkinson’s disease, it wasn’t until recently when she returned to the Inpatient Rehabilitation for a fractured arm, that she discovered that her passion was not forever lost. During a session with Jessica Krug, a University of Conway (*should be Central*) Arkansas student doing OT clinical training at WRMC, a “fire was re-lit.”

While attending Occupational Therapy during Inpatient Rehab, she told Jessica about her love of painting. Jessica mentioned something Linda had never thought about—abstract art.

Jessica found some paints, some paper, and a brush. Although hesitant at first, Linda started painting. It wasn’t long before a familiar sensation came over her. She was back to doing what she loved, just in a different way.
“Now I have my passion back. I developed a new ability to delve into a different medium and I have OT to thank for that,” said Linda, with the smile returning to her face. “Abstract art is definitely something that I am going to pursue.”

Linda has visited the Inpatient Rehab several times since her discharge, each time with a smile and an example of her most recent painting demonstrating how an old hobby brings her renewed joy.

Sweet Magnolia

My friend Hayden asked for a painting of a big Magnolia flower for her place...And here it is!
I love Magnolias. I grew up in an old neighborhood with huge trees and the Magnolia tree in our front yard is the one I always climbed. They're so classic and southern. I hope you like!

Exam Prep Has Begun!

The 2-week countdown until the end of my clinicals has begun! I started reviewing for the National Board Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) about a month ago, since I work at a desk most days and have downtime to spare. But once clinicals are over, studying for the exam will be my full-time job!

I’m down to my last dollar as we’re nearing graduation so I can’t even fathom not passing and having to pay the LARGE sum of money again…and putting a hold on getting paid for real.

The exam format was changed a year ago and now includes therapy scenarios for which you decide what you would do, each decision building up to the next, rather than all standard multiple-choice. Dare I say what I have made on the practice tests so far?…Let’s just say I choose to view it as glass half full.

With Occupational Therapy's holistic nature, OTs have to have the most broad base of knowledge. Your education covers all ages, all diagnoses and all aspects of a person. Physical, mental, emotional, and psychosocial, and how all of those factors affect their functioning. That pretty much covers it all! So I've got alot of hours with my nose in the books ahead.

I remember telling a classmate less than a year ago. “I’m scared to not be a student, because that’s what I know how to do. I’m really good at it by now.”
I’m SO over that! I’ve never been more ready to give up anything than I am to give up my 6-year-running title as student. I’m ready to have control and freedom, to work my way, try my ideas, and, yes of course, get paid for my work.

{I LOVE what I do!}

I feel so blessed to have found a job that I am so excited about…

A job that doesn’t even feel like work…

A job that is so much fun to me.

Isn’t that the ultimate dream in life? But before that dream is mine, I’ve got to earn it one last time. So think about me over the next couple months and send me some smart vibes while I prepare for boards. I can’t wait for these next 2 weeks to be done so I can move on!

XOXO,

Katie

Parmesan Crusted Chicken Piccata with spinach angel hair

For over a year, Sean has worked night shift (3pm-after midnight) while I’ve had the “normal” schedule of 7:30 or 8 until 3 or 4. This meant we came and went each day, missing each other by minutes and only seeing each other 1 day each weekend.

This week was somewhat of a vacation for me. Yes, I was still working everyday and had not gone anywhere. But Sean's last day at ACE was Monday, so every day this week when I got home, he was there. I had begun to go a bit crazy alone, talking to myself while watching tv and attributing it to "talking to the dogs" when even they weren't listening. It was so simple but nice to have him there with me.

And, because I was now cooking for 2 people to eat together, rather than for myself and then immediately boxing his up, I cooked supper every night of the week. Our Sunday evening dinner is a new absolute favorite. It is courtesy of Rachel Ray from her Everyday with Rachel Ray magazine. It looks impressive, but really isn’t, so make it for company or a date night dinner. Here’s her recipe, and alterations I made with a *star*.

Ingredients
· 1/4 cup flour *I used less
· 2 eggs *I used just 1
· 1 1/4 cups grated Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, divided *I used grated parmesan
· 4 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves, pounded 1/4-inch thick *I used 2 large breasts
· Salt
· 1/2 pound angel hair pasta
· 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil (EVOO), divided
· Juice of 1 lemon, plus 1 sliced lemon *Walmart was out of lemons so I just used lemon juice
· 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped *I used jarred, pre-mined garlic
· 1/4 cup capers, drained and patted dry, or 12 caper berries, sliced *I’m not a fan so left them out.
· 1/2 cup dry white wine (eyeball it)
· 1/4 cup flat leaf parsley leaves, chopped *I used dried. Didn’t have fresh on hand.
· 1/2 cup chicken stock *I used canned chicken broth
· 2 tablespoons butter, chilled and cut into small pieces
· One package baby spinach (5 ounces) *I used 8 oz frozen spinach
· Pepper

Directions

Place the flour on a plate. In a shallow bowl, beat the eggs; place 1 cup cheese on another plate. One at a time, coat the chicken with the flour, then egg and then cheese, pressing to adhere. Transfer to a plate.

In a large nonstick skillet, heat 2 tbs EVOO, two turns of the pan, over medium heat. Add the chicken and cook, turning once, until deeply golden, 10 minutes.
Transfer to a platter and cover with foil. *I put mine into a baking dish and let it bake in the oven to finish cooking all the way through. And so it would be warm right out of the oven when I finished the rest.*

Add the remaining 1 tbs EVOO, one turn of the pan, to the skillet. Add the sliced lemon, garlic and capers and cook for 2 minutes. Stir in the wine and parsley and cook until reduced, 1 minute. Lower the heat and simmer.

Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Salt it, add the pasta and cook to al dente, 3 minutes. Drain, reserving a ladleful of water. *Add a little olive oil so your pasta doesn’t stick while you finish up the sauce.

Stir the chicken stock into the sauce for 1 minute. Stir in the butter until melted, then stir in the lemon juice. Spoon a little sauce over the chicken. Add the spinach to the remaining sauce in the skillet and cook until wilted. Add the reserved pasta cooking water. *I added frozen spinach straight from the bag and let it cook in the sauce for 6 minutes.*
Stir in the pasta and toss to coat; season with salt and pepper. Add the remaining cheese and toss. *Here I added shredded parmesan. *

Serve the pasta with the chicken.

It's beautiful! And so delicious. Lemony, buttery, cheesy. YUM.

Oliver reeeally wanted some.

Goodbye ACE! We're ready for the next chapter...This one's gotten kinda old.
2 weeks of clinicals left for me and 3 weeks of class left for him. Movin' on up!

Memorial Day Weekend @ Spring River

I spent Memorial Day weekend doing one of my favorite things at one of my favorite places...camping at Spring River. We had a huge group of 17 and were so pumped to spend a couple days in the water, under the sun, with a drink in hand.
Here's the movie version of the fun we had this weekend...

We woke up at 4:30 am Friday after just a few hours of sleep to try to get a good spot and set up. After driving around packed Many Islands, we heard through the grapevine that a church bus was about to roll out, so we snuck into their spot before anyone else could see that they had left. We got lucky!

Spring River is all about making new "friends" instantly with all the other crazy campers...In this case, Nina and this lady share a love for "Party in the USA" which we blared despite the guys' protest.

The whole first day, we hung out in the river and relaxed. The guys tossed the football around...

And played on the tree swing...

And we sipped a cold one from our lawn chairs...

{Me and Sean}

{Nina being stinkin' cute as a button!}

{And lovin' on her buddy.}

Back at our campsite, I made some delicious cajun burgers, popped a cold coke and we ate by the fire. There is nothing better!

It was a wild night for some of us. We witnessed a bad-A girl fight, a campsite barricade their area with caution tape to ward off a psycho drunk girl, and ran off a confused individual who busted in one of our tents searching for Dave...We know no Dave!

After Friday night, it was doubtful ALL of us would be able to get up by 7 to get ready for our float trip, but amazingly everyone was ready for game time.

Being Memorial Day, the game wardens were ready too, and out in full force. We were good...for the most part. :)
