Spring Blessings

As beautiful as the spring season is, with its blessings of blooming gardens and the relief of warmth from the wintertime, it also can harbor very threatening storms and tornadoes, like we've been hit with in the Mid-South.

We spent the better part of last night snuggled up in the closet under the stairs with our dogs. With live streaming radio on the iphone as our only entertainment and candles as our only light, we waited out the tornado as the sirens wailed and the wind and rain whipped against the house. Storms don't typically phase me, but this one was the worst that I can remember in a while. The lightening was constant and the thunder long, but as "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay" filled our little tight space, I felt a little more calm and safe. Otis can do that to me.

We peaked out of our front porch when we felt it was safe and saw a huge turtle floating down the middle of the street! Water almost reached the doorstep of the neighbors across the street. Luckily, we fared a little better.

Sean received word early this morning that school was closed due to flooding. The schools are surrounded by lakes of water and streets all over town are flooded. I have the day off as well, with our office without electricity and all the schools and day centers closed. I've been waiting for a free moment to share some spring time pics from around our place, so its a little ironic to show you how gorgeous everything was a week ago but look out the window to see a slight disaster!

Sean took his entire spring break and fenced in our yard, a huge project that he took on with the help of his dad.

They worked every day for as long as they could to fence in our property and give our dogs a place to run.

Don't mess with a man and his power tools!

It was a very tiresome job, but we are so thankful that it is done. We love it!

Now our yard feels like our own and not like a shared property with neighbors.

And our boys love it! We like to keep our door open and let all the light in when the weather is nice.

It took 3 weeks of repetitive raking to get all the leaves out of the flower beds to prepare them for blooming. I lost count of the bags after the first few boxes we went through. I took on the front flower beds while Sean handled the back yard.

It was like a magic trick. We made all the leaves disappear, and they reappeared in an instant. I will probably NEVER do it again. The job was too big! Sounds like a good job for one of Sean's students to do next year for extra credit...

But it paid off. The azaleas bloomed (most of them anyway) and the hostas are huge. We put up colorful hanging baskets for the porch.

Our Clematis grew all over our mailbox! Probably my favorite spring surprise.

They don't look so great now after the storms, but they were beautiful for a while!

Can anyone tell me what this is? I'm not good at identification and everything was already planted so all I have to go by is what it looks like. It's gorgeous and smells amazing every time I walk into the house!

I don't have any problems identifying these:)

So you can see we fully embraced the spring season. Our cabinets are getting a creamy white update, courtesy of me, and I can't wait to walk into a light and airy kitchen. Sean and I renewed our workout routine by starting Insanity together, along with a new diet. As a wedding get-ready plan for the next 2 months, we're taking the Insanity challenge with Shaun T so stay tuned for our before and afters!

If we can make it through the rest of the day, the week ahead looks promising. As our region recovers from the latest round of storms, we are praying for everyone's safety.

XOXO,
Katie

Trevor and Whitney: Forever Young

4.16.11 was a happy day. But also as surreal as they come. One of my very best friends, Trevor Young, married Whitney in a hometown spring-time ceremony. Trev is the sweetest and most hysterical guy you could ever meet. Lucky for me, we met in 4th grade and 16 years worth of my memories are filled with him...

Homecoming dates, middle school dances, and carnival rides developed our friendship and I'm a lucky girl to have him as a friend.

So, I was happy and sad to see him at the front of the church that day. I remember this kid singing Strawberry Wine on the playground and now he's standing in a suit at the altar? Time really has flown in a blink and in an instant we were "grown-ups".

After the ceremony, the picture perfect bride and groom exited the church to an awaiting turquoise vintage car.

And rode into the sunset!

We carpooled to the country club for the reception and couldn't wait to celebrate.

Whitney looked like a little my-size Barbie in a gown that fit her like a glove.

Dev and Nina in coordinating ensembles. 5 months guys!

We had a blast!

He was amused by the "write your name here" beer bottles.

You would think that as many pictures as we've taken together, we would have learned how to get settled.

All settled with my friend.

Pretty typical of me and Meg.
I try to explain something. She stares at me in confusion.

Better. And beautiful.

I love these sweet moments. Like the love birds mid-laughter.

And Meg and her Daddy having a ball.

Dev and Nina on the dance floor.

I finally made it to my Trev!

So handsome.

Cuttin' up on the dance floor.

So so cute.

Me with Dev and Trev

My other life-long best friend!

With his autumn bride.

It was only when I saw this picture that I realized I was dancing in the center of the floor...And all those people were staring. Hahah. In my own world.

And then, what seems to be a dance war broke out between these two lovely couples.

Nina goes for the twirl!

So Meg drops it down low. Uh OOh!

And then, they busted out a dance-off in choreographed moves!
Naw, only in the movies.

I call a tie.

They looked so great. Off to Jamaica!
I love you both! We had a great time at your wedding. Next time you can relax and have fun at ours!

XOXO,
Katie

Updated Patio Set

Happy Easter!!

Amidst the spring time weddings, registering for our own, and the Easter holiday, we're busy with several spring time projects. One is finished just in time to enjoy our patio for grilling season in this perfect southern spring weather!

I am so thankful to have my Meemaw's patio set for our back porch...wrought iron furniture is so expensive! It was originally a hunter green color, as you can see here.

Before:

I used Rustoleum primer and a metallic charcoal gray spray paint, about 5 cans, to paint the tables and chairs. This project would not have been possible if it wasn't for the spray paint nozzle I finally decided to buy (only a few bucks) and it was a life saver! It clips onto the top of any spray paint can and lets you squeeze a nozzle like a water hose sprayer instead of totally numbing one finger.

AFTER:

I got the chair pads from TJ Maxx. I'm still toying with the idea of painting the flower details a bright contrasting color, but I haven't decided yet.

The metallic paint has a little bit of sparkle and looks great in the sunlight.

I love it so much more already!

Happy grilling:)

Commissioned Baseball Player Portrait

My friend Jessica, a fellow OT and former classmate of mine, asked me to paint this portrait of her husband Brian from his college baseball days as a birthday present. He is now a teacher and baseball coach for Greene County Tech. A photograph capturing this play hung framed on the wall in their home. She told him it fell and was going to be reframed...but instead it was on its way to me via the US postal service! I didn't take a pic of the original photograph, but here's the "artist's rendering"...

Stay for Awhile...Distressed painted sign

I finished a quick little project this weekend...Another addition to our kitchen, the only room I seem to be making progress in! I saw a picture of Martina McBride's kitchen (which I LOVE!) and noticed the vintage-y sign that said "Stay for..."

I wanted to paint a welcoming rugged sign for our kitchen on the first wall you see when you come in.

I pulled a piece of wood out of Dad's garage and did my same distressed sign routine:

1. Paint a dark color and let dry.
2. Rub a wax candle over areas you want to show through (edges, random spots)
3. Paint top coat color and words.
4. Lightly hand-sand over the sign, pulling the top coat off of the waxed areas.

I attached hanger hardware to the back and displayed! I'm thinking of distressing a little more to have more black showing through, but I was so excited to hang it.

It's warm, inviting, and relaxing. Everything I want my kitchen to be.

Easter weekend, I'm tackling our cabinets, which will be the biggest project that I've taken on yet. Sean built our fence over spring break so its my turn to put some elbow grease into a huge project that will make a BIG impact. Wish me luck!!

XOXO,
Katie
